Catalina Explorer Expeditions to the Southern Channel Islands
Captain Carl - Bio Captain Carl has experience as a marine biologist, and as college faculty teaching marine biology and marine field ecology.  He has worked on whale watching, scientific research, and dive vessels in the Sea of Cortez, Islas San Benitos and Isla Guadalupe (off of Baja), and from San Diego to the Channel Islands. Carl was a field researcher for the Marine Mammal & Turtle Division of the NOAA SWFSC where he worked tagging and tracking Sea Turtles and worked with the NOAA Marine Mammal Stranding Network. He was a shipboard scientist for the NOAA ORCAWALE Marine Mammal Survey where he helped survey the population of marine mammals from Northern California to the US/Mexico border, and did deepwater pelagic trawls collecting specimens for Scripps Institution of Oceanography. Carl has been teaching the Marine Science Floating Lab Program since 2004, and has taught the program in; San Diego, Dana Point, Los Angeles, and Long Beach. In 2008 & 2009 Carl was a member of the South Coast Regional Stakeholder Group and helped design the series of South Coast Marine Protected Areas which stretch from Point Conception out to the Channel Islands and on south to the US/Mexico border. His Masters Degree thesis was titled “Movement and Habitat use of Green Sea Turtles in San Diego Bay”.
